Improve global application availability and performance with AWS Global Accelerator.

Oct 31, 2022 | Announcements, Migration, MSP

AWS Global Accelerator is a networking service that utilizes the global network infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS Global Accelerator, like Amazon CloudFront, utilizes Edge Locations. Unlike CloudFront, AWS Global Accelerator works continuously to optimize the path to your application. For example, when the internet is congested, Global Accelerator combines advanced networking features to minimize packet loss, jitter, latency, and increase throughput. AWS Global Accelerator can improve the performance of your users’ traffic by up to 60%.

How does AWS Global Accelerator work?

AWS Global Accelerator is like your personal traffic management cop diverting your high-performance vehicle away from slow-and-go traffic jams to your own clutter-free, two-lane highway. Even better, Global Accelerator provides the same traffic management across multiple Regions.

In reality, your personal, two-lane highway is two AWS-provided global, static IPs acting as a fixed entry point to your application. And, you can easily change your destinations, which means adding or removing your AWS application endpoints without making user-facing changes because they only need to be configured once. Also, your personal traffic management cop, Global Accelerator, mitigates endpoint failure by automatically re-routing your traffic to your nearest available endpoint.

Extend Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) across Regions.

If you use a regional ELB, you can distribute incoming application traffic across backends more precisely, which means you can distribute Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon ECS tasks within an AWS Region. However, since AWS Global Accelerator is a global service, it complements ELB by extending these capabilities beyond a single AWS Region, allowing you to provision a global interface for your applications in any number of Regions.

AWS Global Accelerator simplifies global traffic management and opens up uses such as endpoint failover, scaling, or testing without any user-side changes. This is a great way to save time and money, and reduce overall stress.

Global Accelerator vs. CloudFront – awesome together.

Earlier, we noted a difference between AWS Global Accelerator and Amazon CloudFront. Think of them as your personal traffic management cop team working together to make your life easier. CloudFront uses edge locations to cache content while Global Accelerator uses edge locations to find an optimal pathway to the nearest regional endpoint. Together, they increase performance and availability while minimizing packet loss, jitter, and latency.

Explore the possibilities when you utilize the power of AWS Global Accelerator in conjunction with Network Load Balancers, Application Load Balancers, EC2 Instances, ECS, and Elastic IP addresses.
